SEPTEMBER 14th-18th

Independence Day Celebration!

Thank you Parents for helping out and providing the delicious food for our breakfast potluck.  The students needed the energy from the morning's festive activities.

Sponsor Parents Needed!!!
For our Social Studies unit on country, culture, and government, we are planning a tour for the students to visit Casa Presidencial.  We are currently waiting for a call from the First Lady's office as to when our Fifth Grade students can take a tour of the Casa Presidencial.  I'm anticipating that they will give us very little notice (2-3 days) of when we're scheduled to come.  We are in need of two parents who can volunteer their time, with very little notice, to come and help supervise our students on this trip.  Please let Ms. Nydia or Ms. Linh know as soon as possible if you are interested.  We will keep you updated when we hear something.  Thanks!

Jigsaw Puzzle Needed
If you have jigsaw puzzles laying around the house that are being neglected and untouched, please donate to Fifth Grade.  Our students will show it love and will welcome the challenge!

Social Studies Skit
Our class skit on Types of Government.  This is their first time doing a skit with only 5 minutes to prepare.  Awesome job Fifth Grade!  Can you guess the type of government?

SEPTEMBER 7-11

This coming week will be a busy one because...

1. Mid-term grade will be sent home on Friday.

2. Friday our class will be enjoying a typical Honduran breakfast potluck and we need parent's help!  If each parent can please prepare or buy a small dish to be brought in on Friday so all the students can enjoy the different Honduran foods.  Grade 5 has 20  students in total.   Parents are also invited to join in the celebration that day. This is the list of things students agreed to bring in next Friday:

Baleadas(10 each) - Alex and David Blanco,
Catrachitas - David Martinez,
 Pastelitos de Perro -Estefania,
Pupusas (about 12 each) Fabrizzio and Sofie,
Tamalitos de elote- Adriana,
Tortillas con quesillo (about 12 each) Vicky and Jose.
Enchiladitas - (about 12) Ashley and Sofia,
 Arroz con Leche- William,Gloria,
Dulce de Leche/Rosquillas- Marko, Stefano.
Tustacas- Ashley,
 Horchata-Maria Jose,
 Lemonade-Nicole,
 Plastic plates and cups-Ryan,
Plastic spoons and forks and ice-Natalia
Andre?

Please remember students will be dismissed at 11:45am on Friday.'

We will continue to work on reading Misty of Chincoteague and encourage students to read for a few minutes during the holiday and practice the reading strategies learned in class. Reading daily for a few minutes helps students become better readers AND writers.

Students will also read independently a book of their choice. An activity will accompany their independent novel.  Students will start keeping a Reading Log where they will record their nightly readings at home.  Parents will need to initial the reading log each night to confirm students are actively reading.  A minimum of 15-20 minutes is recommended.  The longer the better.  The goal is to enhance student's enjoyment of reading.  This will greatly increase if parents sit with their child and listen to them read or read with them.

We will continue to work on writing a summary using different strategies and learn about when to add new paragraphs in our writing pieces.
