February 16 - 19

We hope you all had a relaxing long weekend!

Second Group Presentations: Ancient Greece Gods and Goddesses
The worked hard and did a great job!




They are now completing their Myth Vase.  Pictures to come!

Science:
We will begin our thematic unit on Ecosystems. We will be learning about living things and how they depend on each other to survive. Students will be working collaboratively to create a terrarium and aquarium.

Groups are to bring 3 two litre Coca Cola Bottles fully cleaned out on Tuesday.  Instructions on how to clean the bottles are on Google drive.

Math
Students have finished Division and now are starting on their Fraction Unit.

Reading
Fifth graders enjoyed reading our two class novels and last week had the opportunity to watch the movie version of both "Tuck Everlasting" and "The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe". They will be comparing the book and movie version using a venn diagram. This week they will begin reading Bridge to Terabithia.
We will be working on different comprehension strategies as well as cause and effect.

Writing
We will continue working on our graphic novels this week. The students have worked hard on this writing activity. On Friday we will be showcasing three of their writing pieces: Fairy Tales, Myths and Graphic Novels.

February 8-12

Ancient Greece
Presentations on Gods and Goddesses started this week and students did a great job presenting their Gods or  Goddesses.



Presentations will conclude on Monday with the remaining Gods and Goddesses.

Don't forget:  Bring your materials for your Ancient Greece Vase Art project on Monday.

Math
Chapter 4 Math test Monday, February 8th.
We will be starting our unit on Fractions this week.

Language Arts
Fifth grade had just finished writing their myth and will start on their graphic novel this week.

Week of February 1 - 5

We hope everyone had a relaxing weekend and were able to come to the Fun Run on Saturday.
This week in fifth grade we will:

Reading: 
We will finish the book Tuck Everlasting and will review strategies for reading comprehension, fluency and reading with accuracy. We will also be watching the movie! As an independent reading we will continue with  The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe.

Writing
We have begun working on creating a myth and fifth graders have been assigned a myth for Friday, February 5. They must include characteristics of myths discussed in class. We have read many different kinds of myths together.

Grammar:
 We will be working on using similes and metaphors to make our  writing more interesting as well as revising different pieces of writing checking for punctuation errors. We will review possessive nouns.

Math:
We will continue working on dividing by two digit divisors and dividing decimals by 10, 100 and 1,000.
Students must practice Xtramath at least three times a week.
Chapter 4 Math Test: Monday, February 8th

Social Studies:
Fifth graders will finish working on the final copy of the Ancient Greece report which is due on Friday, February 5. The presentation on Gods and Goddesses will be on Friday and Monday.


Science:

Important Information for Parents

Presentation for Parents:
 We cordially invite all school parents to come to a presentation that will be given by the Lic. Manuel Morales on the topic “The Challenges that XXI Century Parents Face”. This presentation will take place on Thursday, January 28, at 12:00 p.m., in the Conference Room. The school will be providing some refreshments.


NEW BRICKS4KIDS MODULE – if you did not get a chance to register your child for the new upcoming module, please send an email to Ms. Cristiana at cbanegas@discoveryschool.edu.hn There are still spaces available for our students from Kindergarten to Fourth Grade who want to join the fun. This module’s title is “Cranium Contraptions”.  The New module begins on Monday, January 25, from 3:15 to 4:15 p.m.

Scholastic News - Scholastic Book Club leaflets were given out last week. This is an optional activity offered by the school, because we know you want to motivate your child to read at home.  With your purchase, our library will accumulate points to redeem more books for the benefit of your children in our school.  The due date to purchase the books online is January 25. The books will arrive to the school in one single delivery, and we will distribute them to the students according to their orders, approximately three weeks after the purchase due date.

DPTO UPCOMING EVENTS – Please support the DPTO in their activities that aim to foster community building, school pride and fund raising for school project!
**BREAKFAST will be sold at the informational assembly on Saturday, January 23
**FUN RUN – to be held at school on Saturday, January 30 at 8:30 a.m.
**BINGO – will take place on Friday February 19

VALENTINE’S DAY SALE – The Seniors 2016 will give out flyers this week so that our students can pre-order their candies, flowers, ect for Valentine’s Day, which will be celebrated on Friday,  February 12. Payment for the orders will be picked up one week before, on Friday, Febraury 5. The Seniors 2016 thank you in advance for your cooperation in this activity.

Week of January 25 - 29

This week in fifth grade students will

Reading: 
Fifth graders will continue to read Tuck Everlasting in class for guided reading and will read The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe as an independent reading. They will work on this book independently and will be expected to answer comprehension questions both orally and in written form. Both novels are fantasies.
Writing:
We have finished our fantasy stories and are now ready to publish! This week students will be taking books home to share with family. We will begin learning about characteristics of myths and will begin brainstorming ideas to write our own.
Grammar 
We will review the proper use of quotations when using dialogue.

Social Studies: 
Students will continue to work on their projects on Greece. Some will need to bring electronic devices to school to research important facts.

Math: 
We will begin Chapter 4  Dividing with 2 Digit Divisors. Students must continue to practice Xtramath at home for fluency.
